It is possible to define the dua (du’a) as being an invocation or a prayer addressed to Allah. It represents the very essence of worship (ibadah). Dua should be the only recourse available to the believer, as it is a conversation with Allah. The views of the faithful differ on the ideal time, presentation and content of this invocation, but there is a broad consensus on the fact that it should be practiced by being humble, clear, submissive and certain that Allah will answer it.
- Choose a good time
Present your invocation at the beginning, at the end or during the prayer (salat). Opinions of Islamic rites differ on the best time to present a dua. For example, some believers claim that it is more appropriate to do so during prostration in prayer (sajdah).
-Others believe that the invocation can occur at any time during the prayer, even at the beginning or at the end of it.
– It is always appropriate to perform ablution (wudhu) and look towards the qibla (the Kaaba in Mecca) during prayer (salat).
Focus on not being distracted. Regardless of when you choose to do the invocation, it is essential to put yourself in an appropriate frame of mind. Eliminate all sources of distraction and focus especially on the invocation itself. Remember that you are speaking directly with Allah . A lack of concentration would be tantamount to an insult to Allah. Moreover, it will undermine the sincerity of your dua and your requests.
Be humble, submissive and confident. It’s not about making demands, negotiating, or assuming you know what’s best for you. Rather, it is an opportunity to accept the divine will with gratitude and certainty. Say your invocation when you are sure to be heard and to receive a response . As a believer, you should be sure that Allah never fails to answer a dua. However, you must also accept an answer other than what you (proudly) believe to be your best interests.
Say your prayer when you feel happy, sad or confused. However, do not fail to do so when you are happy and grateful for the many blessings you receive in your life. You can also do your dua when you are faced with almost insurmountable difficulties and need help and advice. Whatever your situation, always be sure that you will be heard and that you will never be ignored . You can do your dua anytime, provided you are able to maintain focus, be humble and submissive.
